AACPS New Hybrid Learning Schedule Survey Deadline 5/23 at 5 PM

AACPS New Hybrid Learning Schedule Survey Deadline 5/23 at 5 PM

Annapolis, MD (Arundel.News & AAFA)- Families of students in Anne Arundel County Public Schools have until Friday to complete the newest survey on whether they want to enroll in the hybrid learning model. The survey also asks families if they would like to move to a four day schedule if AACPS is able to work out the logistics before the end of the school year. The survey indicates that students who wish to switch from all virtual to the hybrid 2 day in person schedule, will be given preference when adding school days. If you filled out the previous surveys to be placed on the hybrid wait list, you will be given preference according to the survey. However, AACPS carefully pointed out that even if the hybrid or the four day schedule are requested by families, what it calls "limitations" could prevent the implementation of additional hybrid days.

Some of those limitations include space limitations in classrooms, teacher accommodations, cohort-day choice, or lack of midday monitors, and bus seating limitations based on social distancing mandates.

Despite uncertainty over AACPS' ability to fill staff needs that are necessary to add in person learning days, the language does spell out that a return to a five day schedule is off the table at this time. Arundel.News is in contact with many different AACPS employees who have repeatedly and independently discussed the need for additional staff to accommodate increasing the number of students returning to in person learning. One of the times increased staff is most needed is during lunch, when "midday monitors" keep an eye on kids. AACPS also mentions bus spacing and "teacher accommodations" as potential logistical issues for adding more children in classrooms.

While the headline of this article mentions the 4/23 deadline, the caption below the AACPS logo says 5/23. Regardless, the direct correspondence to parents in email and text message in Tues 4/20 from AACPS about the survey made no reference to a deadline to complete the survey. Many of us went to complete the survey Friday evening and over the weekend and were not able to. We thought the link was broken (which has occurred on previous surveys) as there was no info on the landing-page about a deadline. Whether this was by design, or a sheer accidental omission of the deadline info to be sent-along with the invite to parents, many of us were not able to officially register onto the hybrid waitlist.
